Sunglasses at the Poker Table (+ SNQ Day 3)

I decided to write my new UK PokerNews column on what seems to be the hot-topic on all the poker blogs recently: wearing sunglasses at the table. Here's an exert...

Recently there has been a lot of talk of whether sunglasses should be allowed at the poker table, following the topic being discussed on one of the episodes of High Stakes Poker Season 6.

It seemed most of the HSP players were vehemently behind a ban on sunglasses, except for Elky who kept quiet because he was wearing a pair at the time! Tom Dwan suggested he wouldn’t want to play in any non-televised game with a player wearing sunglasses because of his fears of them cheating, as it is purportedly easier to see marked cards through sunglasses.

Perhaps the most vociferous player on the subject was Daniel Negreanu, who has followed this up by posting his views on his blog on a couple of different occasions. He almost seems to suggest that not wearing sunglasses contained some element of skill, pointing towards the fact that “the majority of best players in the world do not wear sunglasses." Read more

Day 3 was March 28th. My first losing day, and as you can tell from my updated graph it was rather gross! However I'm not too concerned about it as I ran way below EV. I'm a bit worried that playing 180-mans and 45-mans at the same time is causing me to play the 45-mans worse, so I'll be keeping an eye on that in my next couple of sessions.

Friend's Wedding (+ SNQ Day 2)

Somehow managing to post just after returning from two of my friend's wedding together, I obviously didn't drink enough of the free wine on the table! Was a really nice day, sadly for the bride and groom it was rather gloomy weather-wise, but it didn't put a damper on the event, and I enjoyed "mingling" and doing some dodgy dancing in the particularly cheesy disco.

Day 2 was March 27th. Lots of 10th-18ths in 180-mans meant the day could have gone much better, but still a decent day...

Supernova Quest Day 1 & Create the perfect stack...

I just watched a very succinct 5-minute tutorial that is going to prevent a whole lot of mid-session tilt. With only being allowed to observe 20 tables on PokerStars, any fiddling with the layout I would have to do whilst playing 20+ tables, which isn't easy and is very stressful! Little did I know there was a way around this, which is especially easy to implement if you stack your tables. If you are interested in this tutorial, click here. It's provided by the team behind new software Hjälper.

The delay in getting my first video blog (available here if you missed it) means I am slightly behind reporting progress from my new 'Supernova Quest'. I want to post daily results, but didn't want my first video blog to lose focus. So these results are actually from May 25th. It won't take long to catch up to real time, as I had to have a day off thanks to both the PokerStars server being reset and the TableNinja server going down on Wednesday (only 2 days into the challenge, the timing on that kinda sucked!). Also I am going to a friends wedding tomorrow so won't be able to play then either. It felt good to get off to a fantastic start, but the reality is I should only have won approximately $300 on average for the games I was playing, so it was just short term variance going well for once...

My 1st video blog...

"Recommended Reading" mentioned in the video blog:

I can't believe how long it took me to record a paltry 10 minutes of film. The editing process took a bloody long time as I'm apparently unable to string more than two sentences together at a time with a camera pointed on me. It also took 4 attempts to upload it onto YouTube! Tilllllllt!

Sigh @ my first blog making it come across like I have some man-love for Stuart Rutter as I mention him approximately 679 times.

I'm actually a couple of days into the "Supernova Quest" that I mention in the video, and will start posting results up soon using this template. Challenges like this have motivated me in the past, and if I am able to make Supernova in 7 months it will mean I have put in the volume that I would like to consistently hit. I do have a bit of a head start, having made 6750 VPPs so far this year. 100,000 is the target, so lets gogogogo...

I talk too much (but don't update enough!)...

I was meaning for my next blog post to be my first video blog, but somehow haven't found the time to sort it out, and with my blog being long overdue an update you'll have to make do with this!

Poker is still not going great. I've been trying to put as much time into studying my game as I can, but I can't seem to get back to the crushing I was doing in February/March. My play has been a bit sporadic, and after the GUKPT Coventry this week (I shall be playing the £300 event on Wednesday evening and the £1k main event on Friday), I will be focusing on grinding a decent schedule. 100 games a day, 5 days a week is perfectly reasonable and there's no reason I shouldn't be churning that out almost every week.

In other news I bust out early in the UKIPT Nottingham. After making a big laydown with AK preflop (where I went with my read, but it would certainly have been perfectly reasonable to get it in/go busto), I got pretty coolered the very next hand with JJ vs KK on a 238 board. I was beating myself up over it for a day or so because the guy gave me this huge Hollywood act before making the final shove, but I was getting a zillion-to-one on a call so although it felt like a fold, I don't think it was a realistic option.

Something that I noticed in this tournament was that I talk too damn much at the table. It's a bad-beat if you get stuck on my right because I'm often just going to natter away at you. I guess I don't get that much social interaction being stuck behind a computer at home a lot of the time, and live poker gives me that outlet. However I don't take enough note of the action on hands that I'm not playing, which is important for understanding how your opponents are playing. I'm gonna try and cool it down for my next tournament, and see if that extra focus will allow me to make it to the antes for the first time in a live tournament this year! (I've only played 2 tournaments this year, so that trivia isn't too worrying just yet...)
